Balance group management

Balance group management by Alpiq: a simple, competitive solution. Optimise your presence on the liberalised market.

A new balance group model was introduced on 1 January 2009. By joining our balance group, energy utilities gain a privileged position. Because with our management system, we can respond efficiently and transparently to your needs.

What is a balance group?
A balance group is a virtual structure that combines market players in one group for billing purposes. This system was set up by swissgrid, the operator of the Swiss transmission grid. Continual balancing of the energy generated and the energy consumed entails costs. swissgrid charges each balance group for this balance energy, i.e. the difference between scheduled and actual consumption and production volumes.

Why should I join?
Every operator on the Swiss market must join a balance group unless they constitute an independent balance group. This system offers major advantages: The larger the number of players in a group, the lower the balance energy costs. Indeed, a large proportion of the variations can be offset within a single balance group. This is known as bundling.
